Solar news for Pakistan

  1. Battery storage draws crowds at Solar Pakistan 2026 in Karachi

Home, commercial and industrial battery systems were among the most visited stands at the three-day Karachi expo. A Shenzhen storage maker told the paper it built a Pakistani customer base in about a year and may consider local assembly under the 2026–31 lithium-ion battery manufacturing policy. The report cites forecasts of 8.75 GWh of lithium-ion battery demand by 2030.

  2. FPCCI says new solar-hour tariff will not move industry off rooftop solar

The federation welcomed the cut in industrial power tariffs to 12 cents but wants rates below 9 cents for all industrial users. It argued that factories already run around daytime solar hours and that self-generated solar stays cheaper than the grid even at the proposed solar-hour rates, so the two-part time-of-use tariff's high fixed charges will not fix the midday demand dip.

  3. Solar panel prices hold steady at about Rs 39–44 per watt

Market rates compiled on 10 October show panels in the 585–620 W range selling for roughly Rs 38 to Rs 45 per watt, depending on brand, grade and dealer. That puts a single panel at about Rs 22,000 to Rs 27,000. The figures cover panels only, not inverters, batteries, structures or installation.

  4. Solar Pakistan 2026 expo opens in Karachi with 350-plus exhibitors

A three-day trade show at the Karachi Expo Centre (9 to 11 October) brings together companies from 15 countries showing panels, battery storage and smart-grid equipment. FPCCI leaders who opened the event called for closer work between industry, academia and policymakers to speed up renewable adoption, especially in Sindh.

  5. Government plans a stronger NEPRA as rooftop solar reshapes grid demand

A steering committee chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb discussed overhauling power-sector regulation as solar uptake shifts demand away from the grid. Ideas on the table include more predictable rules, better-targeted subsidies and splitting distribution networks from electricity supply to open the way for competition.

  6. Government keeps old net-metering terms for applications filed before February 9

After public pushback, the power minister told distribution companies to process rooftop solar applications submitted before the cutoff under the 2015 rules. New applicants fall under net billing.

  7. What net billing means for payback periods

Analysts say the lower buyback rate cuts returns for new solar buyers, who previously recovered costs in three to four years. Bill credits for exported units now carry over for one month instead of three.

  8. NEPRA replaces net metering with net billing for new rooftop solar users

The Prosumer Regulations 2026 end unit-for-unit exchange for new connections. Exported power is now bought at about Rs 11 per unit instead of roughly Rs 26, and new contracts run five years instead of seven. Existing consumers keep their current terms.
